Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
