Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
